I have never seen one of these bugs before but tonight we found a total of SIX of them inside the house. I'm hoping you can tell me what they are. They aren't very big - less than an inch long. They are black with red sides. I live in Arizona. Thanks!
Kelly, this is a harmless seed bug, Melacoryphus lateralis. They are very abundant at this time of year and are attracted to lights at night. You may want to minimize outdoor lighting for awhile. I know people panic now, thinking every true bug like this is a "kissing bug," but not true. Sleep easy.
I am relieved. I have trouble with mosquitos gnawing on me during monsoon season...I don't need another blood sucker to worry about. I thought it probably wasn't a kissing bug (I compared the photo of "my" bug with one of a kissing bug from your blog), but I feel much better hearing it from you. Thank you Eric! I'll sleep better tonight.
